Not fishing related - Alternator dead
Submitted by Oracle on Wed, 2012-03-07 17:00
Gang,
My Navara D40 petrol has dropped it's bloody alternator. Dead.
It's getting looked at but Nissan is quoting $2400 for what must be the gold plated, diamond encrusted model. Part only - installation extra! And this is not me going to Nissan for the job, just quote on the part.
For that price, It'll make a good super quick trade in I think!
Anyone had this issue before or could recommend a cheap rebuilt one? Or auto electricians on site that deal with rebuilds?
Cheers

way too much $$$ if you ask me
$2400!!!! what the hell!!! i just checked on ebay and you can get one brand new for $500 mate. its a super easy job to replace so i'd suggest buying an owners workshop manual for your car from repco or supercheap and doing it yourself. pretty sure it should only be 2 bolts and maybe 3 wires to cut and join. I've done plenty of work on my own cars in the past and these days i dont trust anyone with my car but myself, got sick of being ripped off by mechanics trying to scam $$$
at least get another quote if you cant do it yourself because that price just seems rediculous to me

Hey Oracle I don't get it mate you know your question is non fishing related yet you still post it in the fishing discussion forum??????
There is a section for general discussion.
Sorry if this comment seems a bit harsh but there is a format to this forum which is designed to keep threads organised and easy to find.

Before you change it over
Before you change it over give it a few taps with a hammer or handle of one of the bigger screwdrivers. Sometimes as the bushes wear the jam and don't move down to make contact anymore and the tap knocks them lose and presto it starts working again. May work and may not. If it works keep in mind the bushes are likely pretty worn and it will eventually need replacing anyway (and may not be 100% reliable as it will eventuallly chuck it in).

Cost me $480 for a alternator
Cost me $480 for a alternator for a 4.2 diesel with vacum brake pump on back all one unit in Alice Springs last year.( Not that I expect you to travel to the Alice) 2 hours work to pull old one off and fit new one, not a hard job. Can't see why they should be charging like a wounded bull. Defiantly shop around alot of after market are cheaper and just as good.

dosent surprise me
I just had my diesel pump replaced on my rodeo....12 years old cost $3500 so $2400 for an altenator is not that far fetched
I think though with the fuel pump there was no non genuine alternatives like an altenator

Get one from a wreckers or
Get one from a wreckers or get an auto leccy to rebuild it then sell the car. I hate to tell you but the alternator going in these is very common & many of them go in the first 100,000km. IF you can find a non-genuine alternator you might have a little more luck because it's the genuine part that seems to have all the problems. Another very common problem with the D40 is the timing belt letting go which will make the cost of replacing an alternator seem very cheap. Basically if you do a little research into the D40 you will find that most people think they are lemons & they are right. Fix it, sell & buy something better. Your wallet will thank you later.

Theres no way a alternator
Theres no way a alternator should cost that much.
Chances are all thats required is new brushes and or the rectifier needs to be replace. Neither really hard to do or expensive.
ps i own a D40 navara and my alternator is fine after 110,000kms. All alternators will eventually fails. Its a maintainable part that has brushes that wear out in normal operation. I suppose some might think brake pads last forever too!! hahaha

Busted Arse, I'm not an
Busted Arse, I'm not an idiot, I'm an ex-mechanic, I speak from experience & from industry knowledge. I know altenators are a servicable part. If you bother to do your research though you will find the internet is littered with stories from D40 owners that have had the alternator go on them in less than 100,000km & that the general concensus among the motoring industry is that they are lemons that have been dressed up to look the goods. You got one that has lasted 100,000km, good for you but that doesn't mean there are not hoardes of other people that have had them fail. Considering it's a part that you should reasonably expect 250,000km from before needing service, 110,000km for you only puts it at close to halfway through it's life. Let's hope your timing belt doesn't go, like has also happened to thousands of D40 owners.
PS: all the failures I'm talking about have happened while the vehicle is still under warranty & Nissan has, on most occasions failed to honour the warranty because of your "maintainable part" theory. Pretty poor form from a big company when it's not at all unreasonable to expect 250,000km from that part. I suggest you should do your research on other peoples experiences with the D40 rather than just going from your individual experience before you get on here & laugh at someone who might just know a thing or two.

You will find there
You will find there are always a percentage of lemons in any make or model that make it out of the factory. My mate currently has got a near new prado with a dead motor and is in the process of fighting one of the toyota stealerships who are resisting to cover the repairs under warranty. Unbreakable hiluxes have had numerous recalls and other problems. Rule of thumb for me is to not buy the first series or 2 of any car.
I think as an owner theres a level of personal responsibility to know whats going on and action some preventative measures. I also own a XJ Jeep as my recreational fun car which has a horrible history of problems all of which Ive taken steps to avoid.
PS I have found most stealerships whether Nissan, Toyota or Holden(all of which ive been owner of) are a mob of k**ts .

I agree there are lemons in
I agree there are lemons in every make & model, I've owned one or two of them. The D40 has a higher percentage of lemons than could be regarded as 'normal' though. There's no doubt there are well made D40's out there, it's just that there's a higher chance of copping a dud than with many other comparable vehicles. Anyway that's neither here nor there really so we'll leave that alone.
I also agree that vehicle owners should know what is going on with thier car & take preventative measures but most people wouldn't have a clue when it comes to vehicle repairs & maintenance & let's face it, when's the last time you actually performed 'preventative maintenance' on an alternator before it started to grumble at you? Not often, if at all I'll bet, I know I've never worried about it until it starts to grumble or I notice my battery isn't charging properly. I also agree that most (read all) dealerrips are a pack of blankers, that's why I never deal with them wether it be for parts or maintenance. I do all my own work, no matter what the job is. That way I know the work that is done actually needs to be done & is done right. Probably helps that I've never owned a new car in my life so havn't had to deal with dealerrip warranty crap. I never want to own a new car either so I can look forward to not having to put up with thier crap for many years to come.

Just to end the debate....
My mechanic put his battery charger on my battery last night and it sent a spike through it apparently. Didn't work at all.
Seems the alternator is fine, the battery is F%&^ED! It has seriuos issues. Changed it over. Car drives fine, engine light off, lovely!
Put a trailor on it this arvo. Put hazards on to check lights OK, blinkers not flashing, brake lights were.... Odd.
Normal, 4foot x 4 foot trailor. Shrugged it off. Car WOULDN'T start! WFT! Turning over but sounded out of fuel????
Pulled the trailor plug out, car starts straight away.....
If you see a navara 2008 D 40 for sale soon in a car yard - steer clear!
