MARRONING at Fernhook Falls - Walpole

Just watched the news and seen that someone drowned setting marron nets in the Deep river. Does anybody know if it was Fisheries research or some one poaching out of season??

beat me too it
Heard this on the news this morning, one station said marroning and the other catching Gillgees. First off sad as someone has lost a dad, a granddad and friend. But that said and I have fished the same area many times in by gone times, as a gillgee spot you seem to catch a few marron. it seems as if the accident happened during the night so my guess is that they were up to some fishy business. If it was in fact fisheries they wouldnt have been out in the middle of the night, catch during the day down there.
I would rather be fishing

I know it's not nice and I
I know it's not nice and I feel for the persons family but this kind of thing (out of season) is happening all the time. I was talking to fisheries and they cannot keep up with all the activity as there is just not enough of them on the ground..

Koonacs are native to WA. Or
Koonacs are native to WA.
Or are you refering to them being feral to that particular river?

Hahaha Collie boys. Its
Hahaha Collie boys. Its probably what they try and tell Fisheries Officers and Water Corp guys when they are caught poaching Marron, "Seriously we were going after Koonacs not Marron!"
Collie number plate, CO = Crustacean Offenders :P
In all fairness though Marron poachers come from all places in WA, not just Collie. And you are probably right in that there may be some waterways that the Koonacs have been released into that are not in their normal distribution.

Koonacs
Having been going to Fernook falls for at least 30 years I can say there is no use in chasing Koonacs, would have caught a half a dozen only in a day and that was before the change to mesh bottom nets when we use nets with small gage netting and at times did chase Yabbies with the same nets. Only one thing they were after and that happens to be my favorite shellfish Marron

Still sorry about the loss of life but hopefully a few of the illegal marron fishers might take note and leave them until the proper season opens??
