Marine Parks

Hi All,
Looking for some feed back on what people think of Marine Parks and the proposal to declare more (Kimberley), do they serve an effective conservation purpose, is there value to the community or can the cost of managing marine parks be better spent on fishery management. What are the long term effects to rec fishos?

Kimberley so remote it is unnecessary
Mind you I do take issue with people clambering all over Montgomery Reef at low crushing the delicate marine growth for no good reason at all

Rick Mazza, Hon MLC is the newly elected SFP Member in the Legislative Council. He is actually on the rec fishers side and looking for input from us (his constituents) on the Marine Park issue.
WA based manufacturer and supplier of premium leadhead jigs, fligs, bucktail jigs, 'bulletproof' soft plastic jig heads and XOS bullet jig heads.

You'll find your answers by looking at the Great Barrier Marine park. Its not doing well at all and the implementation of the marine park and sanctuary zones which has been in place for some time has done little if anything to stop the decline of the reef. Some of the sanctuary zones where fishing is banned is actually fairing worse than other areas where fishing is allowed.
Cost a lot of money for no result where as COMPETENT fisheries management yields some results. How does declaring a marine park or sanctuary zone do anything to slow or prevent the real threats to our ecosystem such as introduced species (from shipping not fishing), runoff/pollution etc. - didley squat.
Sunshine unfortunately you can still clamber all over a reef and kill what you like in a sanctuary zone you just cant take it with you. (and BP and other companies can still drill for oil etc if they like - won't see PETA speaking out about that will we)

As a rec fisher I'd prefer to see the money invested in educated fish management rather than throwing a blanket over an area, covering their eyes and saying hands off
To me it feels like a lazy feel-good exercise

Government should listen to
Government should listen to the scientists, from all the material I have read they suggest closed seasons around spawning are more effective than marine parks.

If anyone hasn't seen it, the documentary 'Drawing the Line' presents a different view of Marine Parks. Of their implementation and their true costs both financially and socially, and their effectiveness.
Understand though that this documentary was paid for by commercial fisherman, but none the less it attempts to look at the facts rather than having a biased view.
At the very least has some great footage :-)
