Lost: Wedding Ring

 Hey guys,

I know its a long shot, but I was out fishing yesterday with Anytime Brad from the forum and unfortunately lost my 4 month old wedding ring overboard while squidding in Petrov Bay on the north eastern side of Garden Island.  My hands were cold as I had just washed them and it slipped off into the weed beds in about 4.5 mts of water at the northern end of the bay.  I jumped in straight away, but without a mask on board and on the drift I was unable to locate it.  While the wife is understanding, I am pretty gutted and thought I would put this up.  Brad has the spot marked on his GPS and if the forecast for the next two days wasnt so bad I would probably go out in the dinghy for a dive to try to locate it, Maybe I will be able to have a look on sunday.

Basically if anyone is fishing, crabbing or squidding the northern end of the petrov bay and ever comes upon a silver and gold ring with a wavy line chased around the centre please let me know as I think I have got buckleys of finding it myself. In some ways I wish it had come off when we were out at 35mts knowing there was no way I would ever be able to get it back than in 4.5 mts in the bay in the weed and there being a slim chance that I might ever be able to find it.

Bryan

 That sux, ive lost mine

Fri, 2014-07-25 11:41

That sux, ive lost mine twice, the first was fishing in our tinnie in 14ft of water at pt peron, lucky i had dive gear onboard found it on a bit of reef after 20 odd duck dives, second one was fishing one arvo at beach safety bay, didnt realise it was missing till next morning, went straight down there could see where the bucket was, ring was pushed in sand just showing ring edge. Got it sized after all that, but lost my original one delivering the local courier never found, probably in one of the papers. I would come and help dive for it if you would like m8?

Waterproof metal detectors - you can get them, don't ask me where or how much they'd cost to hire.

Yep, did the same thing after squidding up here and as you said... washing my hands and i could feel it go but the more I tried to stop it, it pinged off and gone. Never to be seen again. I did claim it on insurance though and got most of the money back. Bloody missus made me get another one though.

Cheers

Thanks guys

Fri, 2014-07-25 12:27

Axey45 thanks heaps, I will be keeping an eye on sundays conditions, I will probably make the trip over in the dinghy if it looks half reasonable.  I will get in touch to let you know, 1/2 the problem is the dinghy isnt really set up for diving but I reckon I will give it a crack.

Paul H - Thanks, a quick search revealed between $550-2000 to purchase and im still looking into hire places.  Have found one bloke for hire for underwater metal detecting with reasonable rates, but he doesnt do scuba.

I might try the insurance route if diving doesnt work.  Maybe some dive stores might be able to help.

Its when a ring gets stripped of a finger by machinery or hooked on something immovable. Let your imagination loose on the picture-its not pretty

Oh yeah, ive done that with warp wire, reloading drums on trawler when the wooden wire drum chewed centre out, had to put it on side and flick the wire off that ran through half turn on bollard on wharf then to winch, did alrite for a while greased up hands, then the wire kinked up over my pinky, shouting for them to stop winch before it tightened and ripped my finger off, which they did just. peeled the skin off from the kink pressure. fark that again, well they wouldnt allow it these days with OHS laws.

Brad took me out, conditions were not brilliant on the way out, but calmed while we were out there.  I got a pretty good queen snapper, and Brad cleaned up on a fox fish, good dhuie on his light gear and a good kgw.  He also filleted, bagged, cleaned and split our catch.  Champ.

Cheers for the call, and I will be in contact tomorrow.

Yep, I know all about gloving injuries, one of the many reasons I said I didnt want a ring aside from fear of losing it.  I have never really been a jewellery wearer aside from watches, but even that faded with the onset of mobiles.  Anyway I got married and it really has stuck with me and now I have this shit feeling in my guts for losing it.

I have been home, was pretty emo telling Jane, but she was really good about it.

Axey45, yep I have scuba and will be hauling it out on sunday I reckon.  Vinnie, whats your plans on sunday?

Couldnt find a hire one

Sun, 2014-07-27 11:31

We have the gps track and a spot marked only seconds after so I will just go for a look to see if it is on the bottom amongst the weed.  If not I may wait till oct and go with Reef Monkey who has one but is out of town.  At $600-2000 they are not cheap and apparently its not so simple as plug it in and go.  So with managing your diving and equip, searching, tuning a detector and listening on underwater headphones it sounds quite complicated.

As you say conditions on the surface will be crap, but ill be in the water pretty much straight off.

Detector

Sun, 2014-07-27 17:56

I have used detectors commercially for many years, I can pre set for you and all you have to do is listen, trained ex navy divers to do it so I guess just about anyone can use one!

Unfortunately no luck. The trip over was ok except for a few squalls, Brad had made up some markers from dive weights and crab floats which we set up over our drift on the gps.  We then anchored upwind and I geared up, triple checked the shark shield and dropped in.  Conditions were shit. Pea soup and a wave action back and forth of upto 3 mts.  I spent about 35 mins trying to navigate between the markers, but couldnt see the boat from the bottom in 4.5 mt, couldnt see floats on the surface or the rope/weight on the bottom from 3mts away.  I just set bearings and would swim 5, 10, 15 fin strokes from the markers in radians and then try to return.  A fair few heartstopping moments when seeing a glint which would lead to trying to stay on station for long enough to see if it was just another shiny shell.  Alas after 35 mins it became clear that without calm conditions and a way to do a methodical search it was virtually impossible.  Like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Maybe I will have to look into the detector route.

thought it looked pretty shitty in that direction from our bridge.

Dont be disheartened, pick a good day and get Dave and his detector down there and you should have 10 times the chance

Mon, 2014-07-28 10:37

Sorry to here m8, can you see the bottom the day you lost it, was it all ribbon weed or sand patches where you think it landed on bottom. Did you take note of speed n direction of drift and swell size n direction. Id say you did just asking.
