If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Sorry to pinch a little off the post

But years ago I always used Whitfords VSR and the call sign is ingrained in my mind - VJ6LQ. That was fishing,  diving and Rotto trips out off Perth.

Now I am Mandurah based. Can I still use that callsign from there, or wouldnt it reach.

Nothing against the others, but it almost would be automatic for me to call that.

Cheers

Neels

You won't reach Whitfords from Mandurah unless conditions and radio traffic are spot on.

Call in to Mandurah on VMR 611 or Mandurah Marine Rescue that way if something goes wrong they have the local area knowledge

How high off the water is

How high off the water is your arial? How high is the output on the VHF?

A high powered, hard wired VHF with high antenna would get you a fair way.

We can get 80 nautical miles on a good day, but we have a whip 77 foot off the water.

We used to call a mate up in Exmouth from the top of the Montes to let him know when we would be berthing in the marina each time we were fishing our way down from Hedland.

Def agree with calling the local sea rescue for your area , but as a side note , I'm always surprised at the distance I can transmit and receive with the vhf.

Heard somebody at Hale rd reef the other day talking to 6lq.   I was 60nm away.  (ch 73)

Operating Hours

Just be aware that Twop Rocks & Mandurah do not monitor their radios 24 hours a day. I think it is only 7.00am to 6.00pm. If going from Two Rcok and now response from them travel about half nautical mile of the cost and call Whitfords. All three groups in the metro area, Whitfords, Fremantle and Cockburn sea rescue monitor the radios 24 hours a day.

Also when ever calling make sure you are not inside the marina. With all the limestone/rock etc it can be difficult to hear your signal or we may hear you but you may not hear us.

Have logged with VMR. Just wondered because VJ6LQ comes so natural.

PS: VHF with high antenna

Two rocks marine sea reascue : Two rocks

was a wierd day we tried to log onto VMR677 but they told us to switch to two rocks sea rescue, any idea why?

I like the idea of heading a nautical mile offshore to log in at whitford if two rocks was closed...good idea.
