Jessica Meeuwig is coming to Busselton on May 19 at 6 o'clock at the Tennis Club to discuss the recent Federal Marine Park Draft management Plan and how Geographe Bay is UNPROTECTED.We'll be ready this time and I urge people who fish to attend and voice their objection.

We'll Need some Help.
The reason she comes down here is because there is an audience of arm chair environmentalists who wouldn't have a clue of what is happening in the marine environment and get sucked into the propaganda put out by the Pew organisation that jessica's representing. I find it strange that Geo. Bay is the topic and not the oil drilling lease off Margs. that the sanctuary zone just doesn't quite reach. Maybe we should be mentioning her associate and partner that has ties to the oil drilling industry.

Basically
Professor Jessica Meeuwig is a marine scientist at the Centre for Marine Futures, Oceans Institute, University of WA.
She's pretty much a muppet that Norman Moore rolls out whenever he wants a little more credability to his decisions.
Shame she fails completely at that task.
I'm sure Tony will be around to let you know what he thinks of her

Uh huh, ok, thanks for that Matt. Always need to be wary of those people who think they are doing the world of good, but are really only working toward there own agendas.

Matt don't really think Norman Moore has much to do with her
He is a State Minister and she just lobbying for Save our Marine Life/PEW/Whoever. Just that they have a big budget and a high profile.
http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/breaking/9275089/fisheries-minister-slams-marine-sanctuaries/
"State Fisheries Minister Norman Moore has slammed marine sanctuaries as a "ridiculous notion" that will jeopardise the viability of WA's commercial fishing sector.
In his strongest attack on Federal Government plans for a network of marine parks around WA's south-west, Mr Moore said no-take areas were "not the answer" to protecting the State's fish stocks.
The veteran minister said WA's fisheries were already among the best protected in the world and claimed he would oppose the imposition of any sanctuary zones unless they were a last resort."
-
"The University of WA's Centre for Marine Futures director and marine conservationist Jessica Meeuwig hit back at Mr Moore's comments, saying that while marine sanctuaries had spin off benefits for fish stocks, they were primarily used to conserve biodiversity."

I`d love to be there too but
I`d love to be there too but wont be able to make it . Lets just hope it doesnt deteriorate into a half pissed mud slinging name calling fiasco like some of the other meetings I`ve been to has.
We all know that this woman hasnt quite got it right but slinging off at her in public just makes us look like a bunch of unwashed pissed up rockapes, just what she wants us to do I reckon.
Just be carefull, dont give them any more ammo against us.

Spot on, marble!
When I read about the rec fishers' antics at the South Freo high school function involving the PM, I had to cringe...ultimately it's not the governments/interest groups we are trying to influence, but the general public (voters) who watch the news on TV and read the paper.

If Only Shorty.
The local greenies down here have been running around inviting local people to the meeting and offering incentives like free meals and prizes if you turn up just to boost their numbers and make it look like they have a lot of local support. I'm suprised they haven't gone the whole hog and got a band in to entertain. How many people who turn up actually care about what Jessica has to say is debatable but if they want entertainment I'm quite happy to attend and challenge things that is said.

Ohh God help us
The greenies has employed rent-a-crowd again. IMO thats what we should be doing. Unfortunately the way things are going we just wont have the numbers, because basically out of the huge number off rec fishers most I presume are not politically minded, fish for fun and passion, and relaxation, and put opposition to something like this in the to hard basket.
Our peak fishing body does not seem to have the numbers, or will to do anything. I strongly fear for my children and theirs ability to just go out and wet a line, be it for sport or table. We will have ever shrinking take zones with little good fishing.
Currently the idea I get from up here in the NW is that the bag restrictions appear from reports to be certainly working, with more and more posts showing healthy populations of dhuys etc being caught. Surely this is the way to go.
Controversially I would prefer increased licence fees, more bag restrictions and more patrolling Fisheries to No take zones. That would protect bio-diversity in all areas, and not just in the designated zones.
What I would like to see is a boat fishing lic for THE Boat, not for people, with catch limits tied to fishing licences, ie a Boat licence to fish from, and a fishing licence for limits.
We are going to get something, and having closures is just not my cup of tea.
I do wish I can be down there, and as a scientific minded person raise my dismay at the plans, but offer alternatives.
JMO, and like I said contoversial, not trying to inflame.

Don't always believe the media
Auslobster I don't think everything the media puts in the papers can be taken as gospel, mate. Some of us who actually took the time to get down to South Freo, to stand up for what we feel is an insult to the integrity of rec fishers, actually know what really happened with the rent-a-crowd.
