Going to DHI Wednesday

Hi Fellas,

A mate and I are off to DHI on Wednesday and at the moment the wind is up to 17 knots at its worst (According to seabreeze) and the swell is below a metre. I wanted to know if anyone has been up there with similar conditions and could let me know if I will still be able to get to the island from Denham comfortably in a 7 metre ally or is a 17 knot wind up that way too rough? It sucks because I have been watching all these videos on youtube and in the videos its glass!! haha just my luck that the wind will blow up

Its our first time going up there so just want to get some information. so any information on conditions etc would be appreciated!! I have searched for info but cant find too much!

Cheers guys

there wont be a cracker of swell inside for a start, and 1 meter outside is next to nothing.

You will likely find that in the mornings the breeze will have more east in it, perfect to travel across to DHI.

And if you travel back in the arvo with sw, it will be on your quarter.

Honestly, a 7 meter should be no worries at all. Remember there is a big difference between uncomfortable and dangerous, quite a lot more than you may think in a 7 meter.

Shark Bay can be notoriously hideous, short sharp chop depending on tide direction etc but its only an hour or so till you can get a bit of shelter

Worst case scenario? Camp on the boat at Denham, have a few jars and a feed at the pub, or just go to the Monkey Mia side.

Dont cancel it altogether!

Thanks for the feedback Rob!

Yeah was just concerned with the wind thats all! our plan was to head to the island and if weather permits moore and camp at one of the beaches.... Was thinking around turtle bay as I was advised there are cray boat moorings there... But if that fails try and find a bit of beach to camp on or camp on the boat in a sheltered area! Like I said first time out there so we were just going to go with the flow and if worst comes to worst come back to Denham every night!

Cheers

oh shit dont come back every night, there are spots up the east side where you are protected from just about any direction, just look at the chart.

Take a second anchor with plenty of rope to use as a kedge (one anchor out in the water and a stern anchor to hold near beach, pull yourself out at night so you dont dry out)

Shelter Bay (Steep Point) if nothing else suits or anywhere along that stretch to find a sheltered cove

Weather looks OK.

I've done the trip a few times, mainly to steep point end and a couple to Turtle Bay. Rob's advice is spot on and the short chop in the bay can slow you down but the Island has lots of protection and options once there. I had 1 trip in 6.5m hard riding boat to Turtle Bay in 20kn wind which took nearly 3 hours and fishing conditions were average, so another fishing option would have been better that day. staying a couple nights onboard is good advice and well worth it to get the best of the weather windows for fishing and travelling. Pick your options depending on the conditions when you get there. Steep point 31nm and a bit more navigation required (16nm across bay to protected water then 15nm to point), Turtle bay 38nm across bay(or 15nm across to Island protection and 30nm along Island), Denham or Monkey Mia options if really shitty.
Also the times I've been to Denham the fuel stations shut early and if coming back each day, you either had to be back in time to fuel up or wait in the morning for it to open which chewed up time on the water.

I have been there in 35 knots

Mon, 2014-10-20 12:23

I have been there in 35 knots of south easterly with 16m of water between the crest and the trough on the western side of the island. On the inside, the chop was horrendous with an incoming tide and on the outside, the breeze and chop was slightly better but rolling mountains were quite spectacular.

Sub 20 knots and 1m swell will be quite nice, though just pick your spot.

Yep, that's where we were. I had anchor watch from 0400 to 0600. Two anchors in and both were dragging...lost a few kg's that trip.

Robs spot on, I have fished

Mon, 2014-10-20 18:30

Robs spot on, I have fished out of Denham plenty of times, the chop across the bay is a pain in the arse, there are sections were the chop really banks up, if it's choppy just take your time. Plenty of protection in the South Passage.
