? for the fly fishos

I have just ordered all the components to build a 6'6" #2wt fly rod for all the tight sections of the rivers down south. My question is, how far can you cast such a short, light rod? realistically I would not need to cast more than 7m. I have 2wt WF floating line for it already.

Any info is appreciated.

As squidvicious said, roll cast will be your friend.

I'm not sure what you are targeting or where, but when I am trout fishing small streams I get into the water and cast.

Guys, I have the roll cast

Guys,
I have the roll cast in my arsenal along with a couple of others. I will be targeting small to medium trout around Manjimup, pemberton and Northcliffe. the reason for the short rod is more because of lack of space regarding over hanging branches etc. more than likely I will be feeding the fly back down to the fish however I have a lot of spots where my 9ft 5wt has no chance of even coming close to being able to roll cast or even move for that matter. some creeks are only a couple of feet wide and the over hanging trees are only a couple of meters over head. also no sport with the 5wt. ill just give it a go and see what happens.

I fish a 2wt down there regulary

The best outfit for the area in my opinion, much more versatile on the streams and creeks and much more fun.

Many a trout has fallen to the 2wt in the pemberton region. Not much cop on the open areas though as the wind is a curse when you fish that lite.(i fish a 4wt)

You should be able to get as much as 8 metres with it but you shoouldn't need to in the tight areas of the southwest.

Also if you ever travel east the small streams in the high country of Vic and NSW a 2wt and a nice small dry are deadly weapons.

Fish aren't big but there are plenty.

Hey mate i have a 6,6 but a 3/4wt... can cast that quite easily 10m and more but obviously with a 2wt might be harder.

i guess it depends how much punch the rod has or if its too soft u might struggle. but than again for trout im guessing u wont

be firing out weight clousers :) im down in albany so mainly salt water fly fish here. but yeh looks like alot of fun u should be right.

When i have been chasing bream in my kayak up the creeks the shorter rod is much better for overhanging trees and such.

Good luck post up how u go would love too chase some trout one day :)

yer the plan is to just fish

Tue, 2014-03-18 13:57

yer the plan is to just fish small dry flies with the 2wt and when the larger rivers have a bit more water in them I will use the 5wt with a bead head wooly bugger or even a dry with a buzzer or nymph sitting under it.
