Submitted by Busted Arse on Sun, 2012-12-23 10:25
On the way to perth yesterday coming from Gero seen Fisheries and the Police were stopping heaps of cars and performing searches which is good to see. Pretty sure it was out past Jurien on the highway. Admittedly its the first time ive ever seen fisheries in action.

Pretty sure we came in a short time after you guys and the older bloke on his own in the small glass boat with the ETEC got done for what looked like undersize/too many fish. By the time we left, they had got him to move his boat off the wash pad and looked like they were taking photos of his esky with the book out.

Yeah must have been busy on
Yeah must have been busy on Thursday at Quindalup. By 0630 the main carpark qas already half full and when we got back in at 1400 there were boat trailers parked everywhere, up on the road verges, literally infront of signs saying no boat trailer parking!!!!. Busy as. But was good to see no parking fines on windscreens. Also noticed yesterday they have opened up the overflow trailer parking there now just to the west in the dunes next to the ramp. Is actually closer than the main carpark! Todays NW was a bit unexpected :(

Good to see them out for
Good to see them out for once. They need to get more active down here. I have been down here for 4 years now and thursday was the first time I had seen them and I fish a lot. With the amount of people that fish out from here over the holidays they should be doing a lot more. I know that they have a large area to cover but maybe they need to send a few officers down from the metro over the holidays.

It's good to see. I know
It's good to see. I know they came on board our boat last Monday and went through everything, which is awesome as we have nothing to hide. Was very impressed as when we used to take out the runabout they would occasionally come down and ask if u caught anything and normally even if u said yes they would leave you to it and not even check :) Now just to get fisheries doing covert ops in the water to catch other ppl pulling up your cray pots would be doubly brilliant! Too many ppl out there pulling up other ppls pots.

Yep, well we sit on our balcony up here in Jurien and we have views of the water. We see different boats all the time pulling up the same pots around the marina all the time, and they don't even hide it either. And I know when we had our pots out we pulled up one of them and it was empty apart from the crays leggs and claws so we knew they had been pulled :(

dont have to put fish type,
dont have to put fish type, and you only need to put your name on complete amount of your fish, i.e your Engel if its all yours.
And if there is less than a possession limit you dont need to name it at all.
If the quantity of fish stored in a single container/freezer exceeds
one person’s possession limit, the fish must be clearly
labelled with the name of the owner/s.
Labels are not needed if:
• Fish have been taken on a day-trip.
• The fish are in the possession and under the direct physical
control of the person who took the fish, and stored only with
fish taken by the same person.

dont have to put fish type,?
Thats strange as I was of the understanding the type of fish was to be on the label and also an amount of skin
was to be left on for identificatin purposes.

This is how I read
it, in the rules book.
Labelling your stored fish
(FRMR Part 4, Division 4)
You may not exceed the possession limit for any fish. If the
quantity of fish stored in a single container/freezer exceeds
one person’s possession limit, the fish must be clearly
labelled with the name of the owner/s.
Labels, of at least 75 mm long and 25 mm wide, must be
securely attached to each container or package of fish.
The full name of the owner must be legibly written on the label
and be clearly visible for inspection.
Labels are not needed if:
•
Fish have been taken on a day-trip.•
control of the person who took the fish, and stored only with
fish taken by the same person.
The fish are in the possession and under the direct physical!
contrary, a person using or in control of a vessel, vehicle,
refrigerator, freezer, icebox, or other storage device in which
fish are found is assumed to be in possession of the fish. A
person who provides payment to a courier business for the
transportation of fish, is regarded as being in possession of
the fish until the fish are received.
Who ‘owns’ the fish? In the absence of evidence to theLanding filleted or processed fish
(FRMR Part 4, Division 2)
The enforcement of fishing rules, such as bag, possession
and size limits, relies on the ability of Fisheries and Marine
Officers to count and measure fish.
In general, boat anglers returning from a day-trip are asked
to land their fish whole so that they are in a form that can be
measured and counted.
However, for the convenience of anglers, Fisheries’ regulations
provide for some processing at sea. The way in which fish are
processed is linked to compliance with bag and size limits.
Special risk
trip. These are shown in the ‘Bag and Size Limits’ section of
this brochure. They may be filleted after a lawful overnight stay
on an island.
species must always be landed whole on a dayHigh risk demersal, pelagic
and Size Limits’ section) may be landed as a ‘trunk’ (i.e. with head
and tail removed) or as fillets, provided that the skin and scales
are attached for identification purposes, and the piece of fish is:
and medium risk species (see ‘Bag•
at least 30 cm in length;•

that is only at sea Paul, not
that is only at sea Paul, not driving down the road. as soon as you pull your boat up the ramp (or lift the fish off the boat onto the jetty, they are "landed".

Roadblock
Yep got stopped by that road block on Saturday, was good to see fisheries doing there thing.. And after a chat he told me they had caught a fair few doing the wrong thing. Mostly crays
But the cops wernt so nice, giving me. Sticker on the ute for too dark tint and no horn (horn works with the ignition on) and a couple of fines for not having the brake lever flicked over on the boat trailer and no flags on the outboards. So few hundred bucks and a trip to licensing to get the sticker off this week .. Wankers!

While i was in gero was told by locals the police between jurien to kalbarri are going to be playing hardball. One of the big ticket items are rod holders on bullbars and unlicensed vehicles on the beaches like out the back of s-bend. Basically targetting Quads and several unlicensed vehicles that run the beaches at greenough.

Sticker
Geez I am glad I went the brand it's too easy to find a sticker opportunity on an old car and trailor like mine.
My understanding of the skin rule is if you fillet at sea in the correct scenario the skin must be on. If you are in possession of fish in bags it's back to the 20kg limit regardless of species skin doesn't need to be attached

Re: Flags on OutboardI am
Re: Flags on Outboard
I am pretty sure its not specific to outboards needing flags, more that any item protruding out more than x cm's from the vehicle/trailer need them. Same as when you have long bits of wood hanging out the back off your roof rack you still need a 'flag' of some sort.
I just have a cheap BCF motor flag on mine for when the motor cover isnt on, but when the cover is one you cant put a flag on. Mind you my cover is bright blue, so i might be able to argue the whole cover is a 'flag' :)
