First charter

Hey all,

got my first fishing charter next weekend with port bouvard charters. ive done a bit of research and theres clearly some mixed opinions of this and other charters in the metro area. so mabye avoid that discussion, its a birthday voucher and i intend to make the most of it.

anyways ive read i can bring my own rod and reel but being that ive never been deep see fishing im curious as to whether my combo is suitable. i have a shimano 8000D baitrunner on a terez 15-30lb rod with 30lb braid, i was going to put a few meters of 40-60lb leader. i find the combo overkill for the shallow water snapper ive caught at shark bay and prefer to use a lighter outfit for these but ive never targeted or caught dhus etc. will this be heavy enough to use out deep without causing to many tangles with the other fishos?

also do they provide everything as stated? hooks, leader, swivels, sinkers, all the small things that make a big difference, just dont want to get all the way out there and find something missing. i trust the charter will do their best ot put us on fish but as i said, id like to make the most of it. any advice on this or something i may have overlooked would be appreciated.

Niko

The outfit and the weight of line sound ok.  I would go the 60lb leader.  Might want to check if youre using your own outfit if they let you use their hooks sonkers etc.  Or if you use them, take your own jigs an SPs.

your own rigs to go with it. Or use their stuff and ask to tie them yourself. Pliers in a pouch are handy so you are not relying on the decky. Happy birthday BTW and hope you have a fish filled day

If using your own gear I'ld be taking tackle too

I've only ever been on two but both times the centre- front fished better than the back

If its a fast drift or others getting bites let line out to help hold the bottom /stay on the ground where the activity is

Hooks and sinkers...

Sat, 2016-02-13 01:01

...a mate of mine went out with PB Charters years ago, using their gear, and told me that his hooks were blunt/sinker was too light but they refused to replace them. Would like to think the attitude is different now but take your own terminal tackle just to be safe...good luck!

Charters

Sat, 2016-02-13 07:00

Last charter i went on, from Hillaries and free gift, there was 3 people with their own gear including me. All running braid so we were told to stay at the aft corner so we didnt tangle braid with the others. 20 people total.

Fishing 120m of water and i got a tangle with one of the other braid users. Deckie walked over and cut both lines and dropped them to bottom without asking. Prick.  Next drop and i was on my backing as i only had 200m of braid on that reel.

Still managed to equal the max number of fish caught, with one of the others who had his own gear, and the only one to get a size Dhu on board.. I used only my own gear.

I went from pt bouvard

Sat, 2016-02-13 10:06

And used my own gear. Even used my own fresh squid n scalies, i outfished everyone. I was put in the back corner too due to using braid and i had people trying to squeeze between me and the motor cause i was constantly hooking up. I believe my success was using all my own gear and the heavier sinker than the others. As mentioned previously, if you feel the bite pay line out to keep the bait in the area.

Good luck and look forward  to your  report

Been on a few charters, I've never had any issues with any charters helping you out if you are bringing your own gear. imo if you are planning to bottom bash, 30lb might be a little light to handle the big lead sinkers and two baits. Would struggle to reel up just the rig alone when heading into deeper waters. 30 lb would be good if you are using artificials. Bring your gear on board and if you find it hard to use while bottom bashing, you can use their set up.

cheers for the advice guys, i thought about using my own bait sandbar but i just use tackleshop bought bait anyway, if i was really keen (and had ever caught a squid) id go catch fresh bait im sure it would be well worth it. considering im bringing my own gear, leaders and just hit FWA protackle for some of their extreme deep rigs i better leave something for charter to supply. ive heard a few mention being seperated to another section of the boat for using braid but i prefer to stay away from the group anyways and would rather not cause trouble for the other fishos with tangles.

what size sinkers does everyone use for deeper water? i have no idea what depths well be doing unfortunatley, i would imagine 30 - 60, mabye up to 100? might bring a handfull of different sized sinkers just in case.

added note the FWA Pro tackle staff member i dealt with today was extremely helpful, friendly and professional so to any who havent been there i highly recommend the place. had a good chat, got good advice that i will be using for years and the rigs look like great quality. shelves were a bit empty so seems theyre doing alright for themselves.

bait

Sat, 2016-02-13 21:50

Both I've been on been very limited on bait too

Double hook up top with a side fillet of mullet , single hook on the bottom squid

30lb may get away with 12oz but 16oz more than likely or if you can get 14oz might be the sweet one. if its a fast drift, deep and using heavier line 20-24 oz

Sinkers...

Sun, 2016-02-14 09:53

I had 24oz and 32oz. get down fast and first! But I was using an overhead reel which to m e makes it easier to pay the line out when needed. Either to keep the bait in a spot or holding bottom.

 They supply sinkers on the

Sun, 2016-02-14 10:22

They supply sinkers on the charter 16 oz for the shallower water 40 -60 m and if they hit the deeper water to try for some pinkies and red snapper 90 -115 they give u a 20 or 24 oz sinker these sinkers have stuff around them to prevent them causing damage to the boat. Deppending on the day they normally do a bit of trolling out to the spots which when I was deckieng on there a few weeks ago resulted in some good tuna. If you have braided line fish the back of the boat to avoid tangles I've always found that the most productive spot anyway. Good luck hope you get some good fish
