Exmouth, Mildura wreck

Hi.

I will be my first trip to Exmouth in 2 weeks and have dug up as much research as I can about Exxy and still have some questions . I will be fishing from shore and jetty. Fly fishing and lure casting.

Where are the flats that I can go wading safely for fly fishing. ?
When is the best time to wade, rising tide ?
It would also be my first time getting into the water wading.

Mildura wreck : when fellow fishermen suggests to fish at the wreck, what do they mean ?
Does one fish from shore and cast out to the wreck or does one go into the water and get close to the wreck ? Or get to the wreck itself?

From Google s image, the wreck looks far out. Will it be deep ?

Sand flies : where are they found generally ? Gulf side or the western side ?

Thanks for reading.
Any reply would be appreciated.

Where to start with this ??

Where to start with this ?? :)

Mildura wreck is not actually accessable and i suggest fishing on the low tides so you can walk a long way out on the reef and cast towards the wreck or the blue holes.

Any beaches will be safe to wade and fly fish .as you head around the cape and head south the water can be nice and shallow with trevally ,spangled emperor and dart etc.

Yes there are sand flies .. everywhere ..

Im pretty sure the 5 mile access is around the cape heading south about 5 mile haha its past the lighthouse caravan park i think

Id suggest the few hours before low and stay around as the tide rises .but ive caught fish on any tide

 Likewise when we went up

Likewise when we went up there, checked poppers and plastics around for about 5 hours until sunset and only saw a small bustup 1km off shore and a reef shark

use a light tippet on the fly

Fri, 2016-09-30 12:34

mate if your going to fly for the queenies and pelagics i would go on the lighter side for the tippet, i would rather loose a fish to the tippet letting go than all my weighted line from a shark taking the fish . the sharks are still very active even land based.cheers

Thanks Todd

How big are these sharks ?

I would be doing 15 lbs for the tippet.

Hutch ( 5hrs ) and Randall 's (party of 7 ) feedback on their recent trip to mildura got me a bit anxious.

i wouldnt go any heavier

they are only in the 3-6 ft region but are still a handfull with a 10wt outfit and as you know the casting component of your line is very expensive. dont be put off it well worth the effort getting a nice queenie or spangly on the fly..good luck

Jealous

We were up there about a month ago and did pretty well on fly and normal spin gear. The west side fished better as the gulf was pretty cold. At times I was seeing only 17 degrees on the gulf side.

Up near the Mildura can be a good spot but like others have said, go looking for the  fish (there is very fishy country to the left and right of the wreck). I have fished one spot and not had a touch all morning and then had absolute mayhem in another spot in the afternoon. The fly fishing is superb. There are flats on the east and west side. It doesnt get better than walking the flats early morning and sight fishing. I caught Dart, GT, Golden Trevally, Queenfish, Flathead and even a Trumpetfish and a Flounder on fly. 8 and 9 wt rods are good for the flats and a Rio Tropical Outbound fly line (floating with intermediate head) works well to turn over the bigger flies (try to match the Outbound to your casting style though as they are heavy lines. A 9wt outbound is more like a 11 to 12 wt line. I prefer an 8wt Outbound on a 9wt but will jump up to a 9wt if the wind is blowing). As Todd says, 15lb leader will work. One day I wasnt getting any hits until I stepped down to a 12 lb tippet. I would suggest taking a spare fly line just in case as there are plenty of sharp reefs to destroy a fly line. Spanglies like to bury you.

An incoming low tide seems to work well early mornings. If you get moonrise or moonset on sunset/sunrise, the fish will really fire up.

On really low tides you can get pretty close to the wreck but I have seen big sharks out there. Mind you, big sharks can pitch up anywhere. I had an 8 foot hammerhead come say hello in waist deep water one day.

For flies, make sure you have clouser minnows in your box in various sizes (from size 4 to 1/0). Any colour will work as long as it is chartreuse . Blue and white also worked well. Little crazy charlies in a tan colour work and I would have a few crab patterns just in case you bump into a permit. Moving very quietly on the flats will reveal some prize fish. The tackle shop in town stock a fair few flies and the staff have good advice.

Suggest you spend some time tourng the various accesses down the west side and look for fish especially in the park but make sure you get a map that shows the sanctuaries. You can get one from the information centre in town or download one on the net.

A stripping  basket can be very useful for the longer casts. If you dont have one, you cant go past buying one of those children stools at IKEA. Search for FORSIKTIG IKEA. Pop a couple of cable ties in the bottom and a strap from Whitworths and you have a top class basket for $10.

Hope you get into some good fish. Let us know how you go.

Exy

I agree with Paw on all fronts. Really also a lot depends on the wind as well.

Theres a lot more to fishing the cape than the Oysters or the Wreck.

I had good spanglies on 1//0 Chartreuse and White Clousers fished at the bottom of the tide into gutters on the West side, just look for deeper stuff.....sometimes at your feet, and dredge your fly...also chuck in a handfull of yellow and white Clousers same size for the Goldens...they cant resist this colour combo tied with a bit of crystal flash.

Try Bay of Rest for flats as well, milkies and every other sort of ooglie there on a run in tide.

If you want to pee your pants laughing, take a super light rig and some micro poppers for the whiting, they are fantastic fun on SWF and mini spin gear. If fishing turns to crap, ( which it does at Exmouth)the fighting whiting will be there. There are some monster whiting around Tandabiddy south of the ramp.

;-)

We still have very cold water down my way (17.5 at Kalbarri)

3 to 6 ft sharks !

Mon, 2016-10-03 02:48

And   8ft hammerheads waiting to give an  Exmouth welcome , I can hardly wait to get down to Exxy.

Yeah Phil, any coloured clousers will do as long as they are chartreuse. I will heed that.

Yes, the Ikea stool does make a decent a stripping basket.but I don't think I have the space for it.  I wish I have more baggage allowance for Qantas flight.( 23kgs check in.)

Will be preparing to tie more white and yellow clousers as Lance55 suggested for the Goldens.

As for the milkies , that s one for my bucket list.

Hopefully , I can get lucky. Weed fly or bread fly ?

Thanks

Milkfish

Fri, 2016-10-07 21:22

Mate, last time I fished the gulf side, for milkies, the slime fly was working, not for me however as I never landed one, but the couple of guys who got lucky were both on the green fly. Wishlist fish for me as well.

 I fished Mildura one evening

Mon, 2016-10-10 19:39

I fished Mildura one evening when we were up there a few years back. The mozzies between the beach and the carpark at sunset were like helicopters.

Exmouth - been there , done that.

Mon, 2016-10-24 17:03

Well , left Exmouth today 24th. Was there on the 14th.

Has been windy , windy and windy.Didn't bother trying out fly fishing.

Only had 2 mornings relatively windless.

Casted lures, poppers, swimbaits, soft and hard bodied lures.  Did not catch any fish.

Where did I go ?

Inside and outside the marina, Learmonth jetty 3 times, mildura wreck a few times on both sides, different tides, many of the access ways along the western side, and bundegi ramp.

Reluctantly, on the 22nd, switched to leftover bait from a hotel guest, caught a spangled emperor. Woohoo !

3 bust off. ( 1 was confirmed a black tip )

Hardly saw any bait fish activities. ( learmonth and bundegi had bait fish, but they were all very relaxed and not in any threat. )

Wished I could write more, but that's it.

Tried getting to the bay of rest, but was turned away when I was about midway along the dirt track.

A truck came along , and claimed that I was on private property, and have to turn back.

And 5 mile access is about 5 miles after the lighthouse.

Still not writing off exxy for me, my next trip there again  should easily be much better.

House flies  were Everywhere.

But only encounted sand flies half way out of the marina s rock wall.
