Boats in WA

 Hey guys,

A couple of mates are looking into a new boat for the summer but are finding it slim pickings. Whats everyones thoughts on the boats available in WA versus buying from the eastern states? Looking at a 6-7m job around the 50k mark....

Personally im thinking that a lot of the prices are a bit rich especially from the boat yards..

 a new boat 6-7 meters for $50K

May well be cheaper on the east coast, but I think they'll struggle unless its a chinese build with a couple of Parsuns on the back.

For that budget Id get a used 6-7M Trailcraft about 5 yrs old, very robust strong boat and likely get a 4 stroke with it if you shop around.

I looked at getting a boat

Fri, 2014-10-17 10:58

I looked at getting a boat from eastern states, and got quotes to transport it over was in the region of 5-6 grand (transport & insurance) if you have the time you could drive over & save quite a bit. The other thing that I looked at when comparing prices on boat sales was that the boats over east seem to be the basic package, some only with 2 strokes. I ended up ordering a boat locally  surtees 5.5 comes with s/s prop, live baitwell, kill tank, radio & sounder & eperb & usuall safty gear. New boat 6-7 m I think you will have to pay quite a bit more than $50 but good luck. Buying from a boat yard here or over east you at least have a warranty and easier to get finance. consider also if you have a boat to sell, most yards will take it as trade in/deposit for new boat. If a couple of mates in the deal keeps the repayments reasonable.

Haha yeah sorry about that they are looking at used boats and did look at a trailcraft recently of which the engine did not test well. Needless to say bit disappointed.

Thanks Sam57, good advice. I think thats where they are at just pricing out the cost of getting it back here so will definitely pass that on. Driving over and back may well be the go.

Did it at the start of the year, got a 640 Barcrusher from Melbourne for $10k cheaper than anything available over here. Cost about $2500 in fuel there and back so was still in front.

Looked into getting it transported, and when we had car troubles i had wished i did.. but the cost would have worked out being almost the same as buying locally.

Tried Rail, truck and sea.. self transport, if you have the time is the way to go.

Cheers Nealez, really appreciate the advice. The boys have actually looked at a couple of bar crushers, how does yours go? Big fan?

Also how long did it take you to get there and back roughly?

I was a fan before i bought it, IMO chalk and cheese in comparison with a trailcrat.. love it.

Depending on where your driving too of course but its about 36 driving hours one way to Melbourne.

We had a wiring issue which limited us to 80k's for most of the trip back which added an extra 10 hours to the trip home (46 hours only stopping for fuel/toilet and driver change)

Needless to say the next trip to Kalbarri seemed like a drive to the shops haha

I saw that one also, there

Fri, 2014-10-17 15:19

I saw that one also, there would be $7K + of top range electronics on that plus winch etc

I sold my TC 5.8 with F115 for $30K 18 months ago, many Abrolhos trips on that and would go virtually anywhere (not always comfortably, but very seaworthy).

There are really no suprises in a Trailcraft, what you see is pretty much what you get.

Fri, 2014-10-17 13:49

When I was looking for my boat I went and looked at the boat in the link below. It was a decent boat with the twin 4 strokes etc. I bargained him down to $31K but that was my max budget. The trailer needs repairs to a rusty crossmember (currently unreg as it is used at the yacht club) and the overhead console needs redoing. Other than that it was a good solid boat from what I saw.

Maybe tell us what your mates are looking for and we can have more input?

Key ingredients

Fri, 2014-10-17 14:14

Ok z00m

So i think as said before about 6-7m, and pricewise anything between 40-50k (just over the 50 mark acceptable with the hope of talking down.

No saltwater mercs and and also no optimaxs i dont think. 110 plus hp and more preferabley a four stroke.

Dont think they want a centre console/walk around, enclosed cab is preferred. clears fine

Fishing and diving predominatly. Will be mostly used south coast and metro with also annual trip to gnaraloo, so decent trailer would be handy as would thrid wheel

Asking a lot for the price I'd imagine but can be picky as have a smaller rig pending sale

Cheers lads

Fri, 2014-10-17 15:48

Sorry mate, I thought more than 7 metres and less that $40K would still be ok! ha ha

This boat has been for sale for quite some time - low hours glass boat, he might be able to swallow 50 bones to get out of it. The v6 stern drive is nothing to be scared of especially since it is injected.

Or closer to 6m is this trailcraft with a cab.

That trophy is actually in the fishwrecked for sale section for $45K making it very well priced. A lot of boat for that money.

Fri, 2014-10-17 15:05

There's a lot of toys for sale at the moment Browny, buyer's market IMO. I reckon you find something in that price range just have to hunt around a bit. Maybe something with an older hull and upgrade motor? A few options to consider. Private buy only way to go if there are limited funds. Keep us posted!

bargains always come up if you bide your time and

a/ avoid buying when everyone else does (spring time!)

b/ be flexible

c/ be ready to move quickly-wont pick up a bargain if you need to screw around applying for loans, valuations, waiting for 3 weeks, got to ask the missus etc. Make an offer and settle it straight away.

Not a lot in that range on the market. I'm looking hard for a mate in that range too although he had up to 70 to spend. He has just spent the last few days in Perth with a fist full of cash but really nothing suitable. Looking at ex East Coast boats now.

My opinion

Fri, 2014-10-17 16:46

I found it seemed to be the amount of time the boat had been for sale determined it's negotiability. If you see boats where the price is dropping week to week the seller is usually motivated and will look at a deal if you frame it the right way. If you can find a couple of small jobs that need doing then you can point them out and usually take that off the price as well. If a boat has been for sale for more than 12 months then you can throw around some wild offers and see what happens. All they can do is say no or punch you. I still have people replying to emails 6 months later saying they will listen to my offer now. Too late.

While it isn't everyone's cup of tea, I bought my 30 footer for a very small price (wayyyyy less than we are talking here). Granted it required a large price (more than the purchase price!!) worth of work to put right but getting it surveyed made sure I knew all of that going in.

Just my experience.

Fri, 2014-10-17 23:27

I came to the same conclusion.

Nothing in wa particularly if you want fg.

Got mine from sydney and carted over for 4k.

Private trucky who just does boats. Great job and so much less hassle than bringing over myself. Lots of things to consider re registration, trailer compliance etc. Use the search and youll find heaps of threads.

Voyagers top boat but command top price. Much bigger market east. Trophys are great too. Chat to vinesh. He had one.

Transport from the east

Fri, 2014-10-31 20:24

 He guys,

Update on boating costs.

The boys have managed to find a winner as far as transport goes getting a boat back across to our great state. That being said I think they may be going with a local boat in the end anyway, however this guy and the price I feel is well worth a mention.

Most quotes that we got were around the $5000 mark to have it brought over by truck, some were even more. Got on www.freightseek.com.au where transport companies bid for your business. Companies aren't allowed to be disclosed on the site, but one guy known as Brett (who checks the site regularly and provides quotes) was really helpful and quoted us $2800 to transport the boat inside a container on a truck. This was door to door delivery from a SW suburb of Sydney to Perth, insurance included. Quote was based  on 6.4m alloy, 8m overall with trailer, 2.5m beam width.

Really impressed with the guy as he was really helpful, and not just with things that revolved around his back pocket either, so feel he's worth a mention.

Fri, 2014-10-31 20:50

Thats an excellent price, I might be wrong but you wouldnt fit a 2.5 beam boat in a container on a trailer the normal way?

Containers outside size is under 2.5 meter and inside is 2.35 meters.

I know the yanks do them on their side but Im guessing you need a bit of machinery, nous and cojones to do it safely plus dismantle trailer
