Best "Find" story?
So we all know that you can lose all sorts of stuff in stacks of different ways when fishing..but thought I'd throw a line out there to hear some of the good "finders keepers" stories?
I'll get the ball rolling...
Last yr I was running a camp for my church youth group at woodman point and was throwing a Waboba (great fun) around the bay with one of the young guys.. Went to go fetch it after the ball sailed past me and my foot hit something solid. Bent down and picked up a 9 foot ugly stick/old Shakespeare reel combo. The line was still out so started reeling in hoping for a fairy tale fish to be on the end but it was only weed. Very random! The kid I was throwing with had his back turned when I went to fetch it, so he turns around and I'm standing there with a rod and reel. We had a good laugh about it for a few days.
Keen to hear some other stories - I'm sure there's some rippers out there!

Dinghy
Found a 12 foot dinghy while diving off bunbury years ago, marked the spot, went home bought a heap of rope, borrowed a heap of big foam buoys, dove onto it again ran the rope through the cleats, pulled all the foam buoys down to it using our boat, kept shortening the ropes until we could get a good straight lift and managed to free it from its grave and tow it back to shore, made a few miner repairs added floatation under the seats, a 10 hp Johnson motor, a second hand trailer, gave it to my old man who got years of crabbing and whiting trips to the estuary out of it.

I once found a wicked
I once found a wicked filleting knife down the beach where I pulled up for a fish, nearly trod on it. found heaps of trout lures snorkelling at all the tourist spots down south. once lost a surf rig at lucky bay then on the next cast caught the surf rig with a tailor on the broken off rig, that was a good catch. found a kayak wedged in a tree while trout fishing. found a heap of marron traps while diving in a dam down south. found a brand new gaff wedged in the rocks down at malimup while going for salmon. all sorts of crap washed up on the beach.

Message in a bottle
Yep years ago heading up the beach to wedge ran over a bottle , with something in it, looked like money!
It was, a ten buck note , and a message from a yank , whom was over for the americas cup in freo in 1987.
This was ten years later ( 1997) and we all wondered where that bottle had been , surely it hadnt been in the water for ten years as
there wasnt much growth on it , but we had to break it ( carefully to retreive the money) as the cork had gone rock hard.
It gave a return address so , I wrote and sent photos and got a reply from a guy in the u.s., he was stoked it had survived.

That's awesome! Should do the message in a bottle thing one day, though maybe it's frowned upon these days as littering!

Swan in a bottle
About 60 odd years ago I was fishing in the Carlotta Creek near our farm at Nannup. I saw a string tied to a sapling, so I pulled it up and there was a full bottle of Swan Lager tied to the other end. Over the road from the creek lived a relative who liked a drink or four and because there were very few refrigerators in those days, he planted a few bottles in the creek to keep cool.

Wonder if it's the same one the bloke found at Woodman Point, that would be trippy.

A few months back I was squidding at woodies point in the kayak. when I'd had enough and came back to shore I saw a rope floating only about 10m from the little groyne(covered in algae and growth ) I started pulling on it thinking it was attached to one of the hundreds of makeshift occy pots that are put in the area.. Ended up being an almost brand new blue cooper anchor !!! I know anchors aren't all that uncommon to come across, but at such a busy location and so close to shore it blew me away ( and perfect for the old 1968 de havilland "speed topper" I'm currently rebuilding)

When I was young my dad,
When I was young my dad, brother and I were going along the beach at Moore river to the 3 mile early one morning and came across an almost brand new alvey reel in the wheel tracks. We were the first ones there that morning so we couldn't return it to it's owner but wasn't the most practical find as it was left handed and we were all righties!!
Burley it and they will come.

My best 'find' was actually a fishing spot.
Our sounder decided to crap itself one day on the water, while we were floating around behind rottnest, who knows how far we drifted as the drift was fast and we were necking a few frothies... a mate decided screw this I'm, just going to have a dabble. Bang, dhuey, next drop bang pinky.... Ended up finding a honey hole by pure luck!

After a huge swell in SA I
After a huge swell in SA I was driving on the beach at Low tide and could see a cray pot washed up still half covered by the waves, ran down and grabbed it and bonus there was a few crays in it... The Pot had a steel plate with the pro`s number on it so I returned it.... Minus the feed - Win Win...
I also had a $50 note float past me surfing once...
My Uncle King Crab fishing off the back of Kangaroo Island found a Ken Mckenzie shaped ( Margs ) surfboard floating... I know Macca and play golf with him down south so I hit him up... Reckons a bloke had just had it shaped and broke his leggy surfing at the point on sunset with a strong Offshore so the board blew out to sea a bit and the guy couldn't see into the sun to grab it... Leeuwin Current took it all the way around to SA... Lots of floatsam washes up on the coast back there...

Lost jacket returns
My old man used to race a trailer sailor on the river a few years back. He had a burke off shore jacket he used use - left it hanging off the stern one day and it blew into the water and he lost it. About 4 years later he sees something in the river while racing again, picks it up with the boat hook and its the same jacket - still had his name written in it. He reckons someone must have picked it up when he lost it and then lost it themselves.

Complete ally mast and sail
With all the ropes and hardware near the D9 whilst diving for scallops - removed all the ropes and marked it to go back the next day as we figured the ally alone was worth the salvage effort and the sail looked in great nick - next day it was gone so someone either retreived it (minus the ropes) or pulled on the tiny marker bouy and managed to get it aboard, would have been bloody hard to drive back to Woodies with a forty foot at least mast though - we had a hacksaw on board to shorten it

A Lost and Found
Fishing with a mate about 10 years ago out of Two Rocks.
He hooks up, goes hard and then . . . . nothing. Pulls up his line and the lot is gone from the swivel down. Amongst the cursing and swearing he rigs up again as we go back for another drift. Bang . . . . . I hook up. manage to get it to the boat and its his rig with a double header of Dhuies and my rig had got caught in it. I of course claimed the fish as I had rightfully caught them. I sent that one in to Mike Roennfelt and was published in the West

Kite Surfing Board
Coming back in off of Ocean Reef and about 15nm out came across a brand new kite surfing board. Sold it for $800 (apparently it was a good one). Took ages to push the dude hanging on to it off too :-)

Fishing in Sound with mate, who accidentally knocked my new $500 combo overboard

to reel in his rod, reckons he has a fish and low and behold attached to his hook is the overboard combo we'd just lost!!

Found a few things over the
Found a few things over the years. Full boat drive shaft and prop (now a good hay spear), 15 foot cargo net, 200m of rope that we initially thought was a tyre, a heap of IV drips, tubes and covered needles washed up. Stayed well clear of the medical gear although it appeared to be new. Also heaps of sinkers in the cracks in the reef. Also dead whales, dolphins, and a gutted friesan calf (think it had been used to attract sharks).
Nothing named after us though
