Also, I remember reading a while back that they were breeding barra to release in Lake Argyle.

Any furthur info on this?  How many?  Was it successful?

Would be great if it turned out like the Qld impoundments, with massive barra growing at crazy rates.

KNX Barra

Plenty of Barra in KNX but this cold weather has shut things down.

Would help if you filled in your profile so I could align my response.

Plenty of Land based options along the Lower Ord, Keep, Penticost etc.

Most use live bait but thats cheating, but probably your best option if you have no boat. I only scored one small rat Sunday morning on the Ord but spotted some good fish in the shallows and one VERY big girl. Plenty of mullet in the Ord presently so plenty of live bait to use.

Tides are the killer here but the Lower Ord does not have tides unless you are way downstream. The river is low as the Diversion Dam gates are shut for maintenance.

Plenty of options for boats but again cold water has shut down the Barra. If you have a boat beware of the skeg and take ya time to negotiate the water.

Dont discount crocodiles!!

KNX Barra

Damo would be correct in all but one thing, that is the dam is not shut for maintenance. I don't work for WAWA but know enough about the outflow to know that the low levels may be here to stay as the water authority only have to supply water to farmers, hydro and tour boats operating between KNX and the dam wall, that is their core business. The manager spoke on local radio last week in response to allegations that less water was being released, they still let out 60 cubic metres per second which is what the hydro and tour boat operaters find to be what they need as well. Haven't heard them complaining so it must be the scourering off the lower ord that has made the level drop. On the barra though they have to eat some time and i saw a photo of a 1210 mm barra released just last weekend down the lower ord, mind you have been out myself the last 2 weekends and no barra scales to show for efforts. I used both lures and live bait but with the windy ,cold conditions they do try to find a bit of warm water out of the current.

Not Argyle

Looking at releasing the Barra into Lake KNX. The fingerlings are doing well in Broome and aren't far away from being released. Think it may be this wet, if not early next dry.

The old Barra farm on Argyle has long gone but plenty of BIG girls still get captured in Spillway Creek each wet. Have a look at PJ's avitar.

Um twitcher, the Diversion Dam was undergoing maintenance as the curtains were up to allow abrasive blasting and spray painting the last few weeks, the gates were closed all but one to undertake such work. I'm not talking at the Dam wall at Argyle

The Shire had shut Ivanhoe Crossing due to high water levels and as of last Sunday were still shut.

There's plenty of big Barra down the lower ord but it's a long river from the Diversion Dam to the Gulf

             If you want to

If you want to catch Barra during the cooler months of the dry you can increase your odds by heading to the tidal mouths of the Pente and Keep. Think outside the box with moon phases etc  and focus on low tidal movement days where the water can sit  longer on the mud flats and warm up in the sun bringing on a bite. Killing tree and downstream will be where I would head and using smaller lures. Good luck and hope you do well. Cam
