Anybody been bitten by a cray before?

Don't ask me how I managed it, but last weekend while wrestling a jumbo out of a cave, he's managed to latch onto my hand and sink his "teeth" in. Bastard wouldn't let go so I've shot to the surface and he's relaxed his grip enough to let me pull my hand from my glove. The boys on the boat thought it was piss funny and I was left with two puncture marks a bit like a snake bite and a bit of blood. Problem is now, a week on, those 2 punctures have turned into one festy pitted sore the size of a ten cent piece with no sign of healing up. ( been covering it with betadine all week). I was wondering if they have some type of bacteria in them that's going to turn me into a leper

YES ! WET SUIT ONLY LUCKILY,took a big chunk out.Yes there is bacteria on all sea creatures and reef cuts should always carry Stingose, betadine and dettol hand sanitize on board. Dettol baths in warm water and betadine should start to clear up in a week if not consult a doctor.

Dumper what you have sounds like eryspeloid. As PMed go to the Dr ASAP as it take ages to heal otherwise.

In humans, E. rhusiopathiae infections most commonly present in a mild cutaneous form known as erysipeloid.[3] Less commonly, it can result in sepsis; this scenario is often associated with endocarditis. Erysipeloid, also named in the past Rosenbach’s disease, Baker–Rosenbach disease and pseudoerysipelas, is a bacterial infection of the skin caused by traumatic penetration of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae.[2] It occurs most commonly as an occupational disease. The disease is characterized clinically by an erythematous oedema, with well-defined and raised borders, usually localized to the back of one hand and ⁄ or fingers. Vesicular, bullous and erosive lesions may also be present. The lesion may be asymptomatic or accompanied by mild pruritus, pain and fever.

Penicillin is the treatment of choice for both disease states. It is resistant to vancomycin. E. rhusiopathiae is sensitive in vitro and in vivo mainly to penicillins but also to cephalosporins (cefotaxime, ceftriaxone), tetracyclines (chlortetracycline, oxytetracycline), quinolones (ciprofloxacin, pefloxacin), clindamycin, erythromycin, imipenem and piperacillin. It is resistant to vancomycin, chloramphenicol, daptomycin, gentamicin, netilmicin, polymyxin B, streptomycin, teicoplanin, tetracycline and trimethoprim ⁄ sulfamethoxazole. Penicillins and cephalosporins are the first-line choice for treatment. A 7-day course is appropriate, and clinical improvement is usually observed 2–3 days after the beginning of the treatment.[2]

Yep the Doc (Crasny1) sorted me out couple of years ago with something similar. Though my fingers (and nose) were gunna fall off. Had an itchy nose, scratched it and the shit spread there. Once the penicillin kicked in, disapperared pretty quick.

Cheers

a Nickname for this. It is very common in the lobster trade both fisherman and process workers. Also fairly common in butchers and slaughterman from pigs especially. Fortunately usually piss easy to fix. I remember yours Mullows.

 Cheers for the heads up

Mon, 2014-11-17 21:21

Cheers for the heads up neels. Doc gave me some bactroban cream as well as a course of cephalexin. Reckons betadine won't do jackshit and said it'd probably keep eating away at my skin like a staph infection unless penicillin is used. Will be a couple of days before mrs Palmer is back in action. Word of advice, if you think a cray is trying to attack you, It probably is.

Ps the bastard still tasted good

No worries

Yes Betadine only cleans the surface. Good to prevent infection but once you get it it cant get into the infection. Bactroban is fantastic and I use it all the time for Fishing accidents etc so dont throw it away. Keep it in the medicine chest or Cheese section off the fridge.. As soon as it looks dodgy on goes the bactroban. And Cephalexin will cover both Staph and Erysipaloid so I suspect you will be fine. However keep an eye on it and if it spreads get back there ASAP.

crab bite my big toe. Me sh...ting myself walking in waist deep water at night. Next minute I scream out kick my leg out of the water and the biggest blueie is attached to my big toe.  Old fart says don't move, p......s off you old plick my toe is in his claw, he got the bluie, me standing on one leg, pooping y pants while he gets the bluie off my toe, didn't care about my sore bloody big toe, all old fart could think of was crab sandwich.  After all that drama, hear snorting and other noises, thought thats it (pitch black at night) this  old fat duck is getting out the water, turn around next to me is a seal, my Shetland Collie on my right, going to protect me (he was walking along the beach with us crabbing) thought this is time to get out and yelled at old fart  FO I'm out of hear, first a crab then a ruddy seal what next a shark.

Normally don't swear but that night think I said every &^%$# under the sun, directed at old fart hahahahah.  Lucky all I had was the actual mark of the crab claw around my toe, no broken skin or lose of toe.

Reminds me off my stepbrothers german wife. We went crab scooping in Mandurah. I was out already when they arrived. They walked about 200m in when all hell broke out. Both wasnt wearing any foot protection and a crab latched onto her foot.

Now mortified neither off them would move. We managed to get footwear out to them because nodody was game to ferry them to shore (not weight related though). Even with footwear the now terrorised German must have felt every pebble as a crab and screamed almost all the way to shore to the great entertainment off the whole crew.

Didnt have to tell you she never went crabbing again. Her foot wasnt as lucky as yours with blood pouring out off a few punctures.

not bitten by a cray but

Fri, 2014-11-21 19:40

25 years back a muddy latched on to my finger , I had to go up to Nichol Bay hospital , was waiting in casualty section and the doc came out and said who is the bloke that has been savaged by a muddy (there were a few blokes in casualty ) I put my hand up and said that would be me , so he checks me out and says he can sow the end of my finger back on but I will probably loose it any way , long story but I had always had a gammy finger nail on that finger and at the end of the day didn't loose the end of my finger and the nail grew back as a normal nail

I've been bitten too, grabbed a jumbo underwater and it used those little legs near its mouth to push my finger into its chompers. Luckily for me it I got my finger out in time with just a pinch on my finger tip and a hole in my gloves. Still hurt a bit but Could've been much worse by the looks.
