Annoying Cray Pots

Hi folks, I have a request for all those who have or know of anyone that has placed their pots on the North or South Leader Lines into the coastal marinas.
We were out today on the Rescue boat & found a large number pots have been placed along these lines.
I'm not sure if people realise how difficult it is to negotiate through these pots when heading west into a late afternoon sun.
If that is not hard enough, but returning with a boat in tow trying the same thing is near on impossible.
Getting a rope tangled around a prop or shaft can be dangerous for both boats, especially when the anchor must be dropped to prevent drifting onto the reef.
So speaking with my Sea Rescue hat on, can I please ask everyone to help us out & avoid dropping pots on these leaders, it is our only way through the reef especially at nite for a rescue. Finding a boat out there is difficult enough without the added danger of worrying about ropes.
Good luck & enjoy your Cray season, but lets keep everyone safe......

Good Call It's seriously

Good Call

It's seriously annoying, I have raised this fact before. Most of the responses where you should be more careful and look where you are driving, but when you leave at 2am and the pots have 20m of floating rope on the surface its pretty hard!!

And another one is try not to have too much excess rope!

its illegal to set the pots in a "navigable channel", in Geraldton either Fisheries or the pilot boat drags them out of the shipping channel

Correct

That's correct Rob, fisheries guys today were saying they could grab them & fines may be implemented to the owners.
Hate to see that happen to rec fishers but like you said, it is illegal...

You have given a few people a wake up call

Not only is it illegal but it is highly dangerous for the reasons that have been stated above.

I don't think (hope) it would not be members of F/W as I think most people on this site come across as being quite responsible people.

Maybe Fisheries or D O T would have a close look at the situation (especially) if sea rescue groups bring it to their attention, and remove the pots then give the owners of the pots a firm warning.
