Aluminium boats..... Genisis, assassin, trailcraft?? Recommendations?

 Gents,

Im looking at a new Ali boat and want recommendations. I want about 22 foot and don't wanna pay over $60k. I've had a look at the trailcraft 660. They are pretty cheap and look pretty good... Genisis and assassin seem pretty expensive. Any thoughts or recommendations?

Cheers guys

Ali boats - recommendations

Sat, 2013-01-05 12:06

You get what you pay for.  These three brands are three completely different hull shapes hence handling characteristics and

sea kindliness vary.  What patch of water do you intend fishing?  Deadrise is 20 degrees on Assassin, 15 degrees on Genesis and not

sure on Trailcraft but it does not appear to have a very smooth entry in the rough stuff.  All solidly built just depends how good your back is as far as

comfort goes.  If you want an armchair ride in the rough more degrees deadrise is better but more expensive to run.  Genesis is a  trusted Jackman design

Assassin is now a Bill Plug design, they used to be Jackman.  Trailcraft not sure of pedigree?  Possibly, as far as price goes, work up a bare boat from Redline, if you have the know how (no paint etc.) you still end up with an Assassin.  Or go all out and work up a bare boat from Southbound in Dunsborough (its still the same Bill Plug design).

Coraline and Razerline make some good boats but are expensive new, for example the 620 model is $80k

Just a question, why do you want to buy new?

Just want the reliability of a new boat and engine that's about all. For the price the trailcraft looks good, but yeah never been in one on the water so don't know about how it handles and rides

My mate first had a Trailcraft and then a Genisis.

I have been out in both of them and the Genisis is no comperesant to the Traily. Much better ride in the Genisis but still safe in the Traily.

And I have been  on three boats which broke down at sea. They all had one thing in common and that was a Mercury that failed! I would say its more important to look for the engine then the hull brand. My tip is stay away from Mercury/Mariner engines.

Good Luck on the chase

I have had a bit of a look around today and there aren't many aluminium boats around for the size and price I'm looking at. Does anyone know of anywhere they are advertised? I have tried gumtree and boat sales!

I had a trailcraft for a couple of years and whilst it did what I wanted it to do at the time it taught me how to read the weather! Put it this way, it was affectionately named the "current". Why,  because if you dropped the 3rd, 4th and 5th letter that was the type of day you had if the weather went to shit. On a rough day I always developed a bout of Tourette's.

600 hours is nothing these motors like to be run not sitting round in the back yard corroding. I've put 70 hours on mine in the 3 weeks. Don't be scared by the hours if the motor has been looked after

not a bad looking rig, 600 hours is nothing, especially on the Hondas. Its the age/lack of use that fks the 4 strokes, not hrs

gotta chuckle at the epirb/extinguisher though-the LAST place I'd want to go if it was sinking or 350 litres was burning-is inside the cabin right to the front!

520 Genesis

Mon, 2013-01-07 14:32

Have a 520 Genesis which we bought off gumtree.  Very happy with the overall nature of the boat, solid and handles well without the worry of dinging a fibreglass vessel over reefs.

Note:  you have ALOT of bargaining power on gumtree.  alot of people are selling boats given their own economic situation and are looking for some quick coin.  That being said, we spent months looking over ads (everyday & on all the sites), until we were happy with the way the boat had been treated by the previous owner.

Our Gen was advertised at 45k and we bargained it down to 32k pretty easily.  I'm not saying all people are like this, but if you keep trying you'll get a very good bargain.

I own a 2005 Genesis 550

Mon, 2013-01-07 15:39

I own a 2005 Genesis 550 Sports and have to agree with the comments above, great boat, huge fishing space, well laid out, plenty of storage and rod space, high gunwales and tough as nails...BUT conversely can be brutal on the spine in rough weather.

I wanted a rig that was stable at rest for fishing and with a 2.5m beam it's lovely but anything over 20knots and you have to know how to drive it or trimmed out correctly- the first few times i belly flopped into a trough i honestly thought i'd hit a reef or a log or something (the acho of an ally boat makes it sound worse admittedly).

Got the johnson 115hp on the back and on a flat day trimmed out easily skips along at 30-35knots+ and fuel economy is pretty good too.

In summary, would definately recommend them, but you gotta be prepared for either a tough ride or a slower one in choppy weather.

Cheers.

James

I've not heard good things about Trailcraft. We put 3 big blokes in a 660 at the boat show and I thought it would tip over  i like their trailers though !

I had a 5.8 trailcraft, and while its absolutely true that the ride isnt flash i found that with 4 blokes in it there seemed no chance of getting it anywhere near the point of discomfort standing on one side. We did Abrolhos trips with 3 and 4 blokes and dive gear. Thats a function of the shallow V and hence lowish power requirements of course, exactly the same cause of the hard ride.

ive got a Cruisecraft now but would i own another Trailcraft?

Bloody oath, at the right price. They are a strong, knockaround rig great for knocking round in explore mode. Plenty of fuel capacity and no pretences.

Are there better alloy boats? Without question there is, but not at the same price.

Tue, 2013-01-08 12:19

Don't forget more tippy at rest, unless they accomodate for this with something like a flooded keel.

Oh and the narrower the boat, the easier it is to push that V through the waves so you can have a smaller motor, but again more tippy unless planned for.

I think this is how Surtees/Barcrusger do it.

Boats are all about compromise and everywhere.

The more V the more horses it

Mon, 2013-01-07 20:41

The more V the more horses it will need to plane it efficiently. But the benefit is that it will ride much better. The actual cost will totally depend on hull weight and power options.

Have a look at http://www.barcrusher.com.au/

I have the 610C and can't fault it, I take it out to the monties and upto 100km from the boat ramp. I've been caught at night in a fairly big strom and felt safe the whole time. It rides like a dream for a ali boat with a 21 deg dead rise. For a six meter boat it punches well above it weight limit.

I had my heart set on an ali for the bash ability of the hull. Of the ali's i picked the bc 560/610c as the one to have. But for the same money for me the fibreglass was a far better package and ended up going down that path (and i love the evo)

Sun, 2013-01-13 22:25

Hi.

Mate has a 6.6 centre cab Trailcraft. with 225 Merc supercharged on back

I won't go out in it over 20knots. It comes down like a flat iron off every wave. (I'm 70 and don't bounce well any more)

Another mate bought a Sailfish ex pro boat.  6.2 I think?.

paid $61 for it with twin 90 Yammie  2 strokes..  WOW.  Like riding on a blanket.  Smooth as.

If I ever go back up to a bigger boat again. It'll be one of them. You could drop a coupla 6  mtr normal boats inside his.

And rattle them.

Sat, 2013-01-19 14:56

I have been looking around at a fair few boats but can't find one that I like, and generally they aren't in the greatest condition with all bubbling all over the paint work and cracked in the Ali... Still looking around!

I had a look at that older coroline but was even told by the coroline dealer to stay away from the older hulls and try get one less than 3 years old because they. Hanged hull design.

Hopefully will find something soon

I really like the coralines too - especially the new hull with steeper deadrise, but have never riden in one.

Prestoncraft make a great boat and I have been in a 7.5 and 7.85 and they were the softest riding plate boats I have been in. I mate has a 7.85 getting built now and the attention to detale is great.

Personally I like glass - thats why I have one :)

my 2 cents
