AIBT and Gamex Billfish Numbers
Submitted by dodgy on Mon, 2014-03-24 09:39
I know a few have been getting into the bills up there lately but the numbers of fish about has been something outstanding.
Final figures for the 2 comps over 9 days fishing were
2399 Billfish Raised
1708 hooked
904 tagged.
Pretty impressive figures.

I only had time off for aibt and it took a bit to find our A game. Finished in 4th with 13 blacks for the 3 days. Not a bad result.

First gamex we had fished
First gamex we had fished in. Ended up tagging 17 billfish. Best day we had 10-7-7 blacks and 1-1-1 sails. Took out champion boat sails in the end. Will be up there again next year that's for sure. Very well run event by egfc.

The majority of the billfish
The majority of the billfish are tagged and released.
Gamex does have a prize for the largest weighed marlin on up to 15kg line and a 24kg and above category. Some years nobody brings any in to weigh. This year both categories went off. Bigger one was a 312 kg blue. They fillet them and package them at the weigh station and the packs are distributed through the community and sent to Perth charitys.
Not bad on the chew at all.

Im thinking of heading up there chasing billfish
never done it before just wondering if anyone who was up up there during gamex could give some advice on what size, style, brand colour pushers worked best on 37kg, 24kg and 15 kg gear and what sort of depths and area's out from tantabiddi or inside the gulf to troll in. My understanding is the big blues are out deepest off the shelf while striped and black marlin and sails tend to be in closer cheers

Blacks and sails in closer.
Blacks and sails in closer. Stripes and blues wider. Generally. Always exceptions particularly in exmouth.
Really can't go wrong with Richter soft grassys and oscars. Our greatest success during the comp was using Hotlips by Black Snacks. Fish just crawled all over them.
As a rule I would be a little careful running 15kg outside comps. Too much of a chance of bigger fish even inside 150m of water. 24 and 37 all the way.

Where?
We're up here now post comps and put the hours in on Tuesday. Went out around Pyranees oil rig then head South to 80m mark. Had 2 strikes out wide and 3 in closer with no hookups, it was like they were only semi interested! The charter boats were stating on the radio it was a very white day in comparison to the previous week.
Can anyone tell me where they were thickest?

South of the north passage.
South of the north passage. Somewhere between south passage and north passage anywhere from 90m-200m with most of my fish tagged in 130-180. As said above 24 and 37 I got a blue 120-150kg in 130m of water put the curry on 24kg line the dacron on the 50w was looking a little thin.
I hooked 2 small blacks and tagged one in 17-20m at the back of the reef on deep divers. Make sure you use teasers. A daisy chain and a oversize pusher or witch doctor and sharpen your hooks don't trust hooks straight of the packet. Especially if your running 15 file the barbs down so it really penetrates getting a solid hook up.
Good luck!
