Advice please

Hi guys,

Recently bought a 5.3m fibreglass cuddy and after a few trips out in the Sound, planning to head out to deeper water this Saturday.

Conditions look good so far, would you agree ?

Whilst I don't expect specific spots, I'd be grateful for some advice on an area to head to and sound around for some bottom fishing for snapper/dhui's.

Also any tips on rigs/bait/tactics ( drift or anchor ? ) much appreciated.

Cheers for any advice,

Joycey.

And I can understand why.

Might have to look at between Straglers and south side of rotto. Some good areas but it does take work. 5.3 is OK but make bloody sure the weather is on your side venturing out beyond rotto.

There is some good ground, you just have to work. Now I am from Dampier, and prior has been in Mandurah for many years, so speaking to me is using 20yo info. But scuba"d the whole area as above and more. No big nor lots of GWS then. I also fished (scuba only 2 hrs max per day, and using old sounder basically had a line between straggies and west end/end of rotto you could see. Best sounder those days was a free dive, but with modern techno just cruise around.

Plenty off squid at some off the rocks, so plan a small fish trip, get some marks and test them. Experience is the key, and hopefully someone will be more specific than me. Like I said havent done it in ages. But used to get some nice feed of snaps, dhuys and plenty of KGs, especially then around the windmills area.

Hope it helps a little. Just trying to help a newby a little.

Hi mate,

There is plenty of structure to fish on offshore from the metro area. Just behind Garden Island is 5 fathom bank which when anchored on can produce Pink Snapper and Dhufish especially this time of year. Personally never had much luck on top of the 5FB but fishing the smaller ridges and lumps infront and and behind in 14m+ has produced some ripper fish. Anchor over top of the structure and burley up using Premium pellets and Sampi Tuna logs. Use only small amounts though at a time. Use a snelled hook setup with a No.2 Ball sinker. Than cast it out the back and let it slowly drift down amongst your berley trail. Flick around a Soft plastic as you wait.

Behind Garden Island and south of Rotto is plenty of ground you just need to spend the time sounding around to find small lumps and bumps. 35-55m is usualy a good range of depth to start in (Though dont limit yourself too). Using a standard Paternoster rig and drifting over the area is the best option when starting out. Also mixing it up and using Soft Plstics like 5 & 6 inch Mcarthy Paddle Tails or Demersal Jigs like Pirate styles or Baitfish style jigs like Fanky, Extreme, Tamentai, Lamble etc.

Best bet is getting out there and giving it a crack, If you want to try out jigs or plastics drop by and we can give you a run down on what to use and how to use it. Or even how to set up for bait fishing. We can show you.

Thanks
