Somewhere the communication

Mon, 2013-07-15 11:09

Somewhere the communication chain is failing. I noticed there was no shark notification via Surf Lifesaving over the weekend. Last notice was a GW off Cott on Friday 12th.

The warnings are originated from fisheries and then relayed by SLS. If there were any detections over the weekend then one or both are failing to issue the warnings.

I may just check if there is a direct feed from fisheries.

There was some guy from the SLSC on 7 news tonight. I omly just caught the end of what he said. He said that people who use the water should be interested enough to go on twitter sites to see whats happening. Unbelievable, if they are not going to distribute why send the info to them ? It seems a bit pointless to me.

Mon, 2013-07-15 19:28

I can use a laptop but twitter no never wouldn't know how my mobile phone is an old brick type do they think every one has access to twitter just another waste of OUR money and as for some one getting mauled that's what it will take for the faceless men to change things unfortunately and then the data on the day of the mauling will go missing or the system "was down"

Normally I would agree thats its a media beat up on a shark sighting but I believe 27 contacts over 12 days - hardly a couple of sightings

Sharks!

Mon, 2013-07-15 20:00

Holy crap, you mean to tell me that there are sharks? In the ocean? Unbelievable!

Anyone who thinks "Gee, there is no shark warning active, there must be none around, I'll go for a swim then" is a moron. There are sharks. In the ocean. Swimming. It's where they live.

That doesn't mean that we are under attack, or there is an epidemic or whatever. It's a risk you take going in the ocean. Very small, but the risk is there. The whole shark watch thing is a load of bollocks as proven on the East coast. Unless they set the dummies on top of the water, the spotters couldn't see them, and even when they did most of them got missed. So for every shark "spotted" by our shark watch, there's probably another 10 or 15 that don't get reported.

I can't believe that my taxes are spent so irresponsibly. Actually, now that I think about it.......

Here endeth my rant.

I agree for the most part mate and as a diver / surfer myself I know its a calculated risk I take everytime I jump in the water. If you dont wanna take that risk dont get in the water - pretty simple and I am totally with ya on that!

It's not just info from random 'spotters' that we are talking about here tho its great whites that have been tagged and set off an alert when they come within range of receivers that have already been setup all along the coast by fisheries.

After going to the trouble of setting up all these receivers and tagging a bunch of great whites they are now starting to get solid info on exactly where and when these tagged whites are popping up and hanging around for extended periods. The more sharks they tag and track the better info and visibility we get on movement, activity and hot spots they like to hang around at certain times of the year.

The thing is I dont really care how many sharks such as bronzies, hammerheads or otherwise are cruising around nearby but I am interested in knowing if a large tagged Great White has been recorded suddenly hanging around in close at my local break.

Sure as you mentioned there might be 15 other sharks hanging around at any random time or place that we have no idea about but if Fisheries is currently tracking a big great white thats setting off receivers in close hanging around at my local break just before I go to head out that's pretty important info that I'd like to be made aware of!

Why would anyone not want that info readily available for the public?

Fisheries should have a web page showing a feed from the receivers for anyone interested in keeping an eye on them.

Good points

Tue, 2013-07-16 20:38

Good points raised there, and I guess as a research project it has it's merits. But it has been sold under the banner of public safety and giving people a false sense of security when they see the aerial patrols etc. And good point on the sharing (or lack of) of the info.

In my opinion, money would have been better spent on mobile bogan patrols up and down the coast.

Cheers,

BD.

fisheries

Thu, 2013-07-18 17:27

the only thing they are good at is crashing into your boat at 5 fathom and harassing fishos and divers at the ramp on nice warm days never seen them out and about on a cold rainy day , they pinged me in onslow years back for having shot a potato cod the thing is it was an estuary cod but the colour had faded as it had been on ice about 6 hours he then gave it away to some grey nomads in the van park and didn't prosecute me as he said he couldn't be sure it was a spud cod

Dubious skills?

Fri, 2013-07-19 17:00

Had them come up to me down that way as well, not sure on the skills of the skipper? Seemed to be making it really hard work to come alongside someone at anchor, in calm water with minimal breeze. Gave my tub a fair old nudge, lucky I saw it coming.
