funny thing is, we longlined

Sun, 2013-11-03 21:08

funny thing is, we longlined thru that area each winter (March-August) for about 7 years and I dont recall ever seeing a killer whale (or a GW for that matter!).

Lots of pilot whales though.

I do remember catching swordies there spilling out Royal Red prawns by the bucket load which Id never seen before and kept some to give to AFMA, who were unaware that Royal Reds lived in the area-or that swordies ate them!.

I thought they said it was

I thought they said it was around January they were out there?
Seems to be around the same time of year(summer) when people on this forum have seen Orcas around Rottnest and Cape Naturaliste.

article in Saturdays paper

Mon, 2013-11-04 07:27

I read the article in Saturdays paper and said I have to watch this doco, it had me glued to my seat. Just imagine being on that boat watching all those orcas feeding and playing in front of ya that wound be the ultimate experience, then imagine sitting on the beach in Bremer then a killer whale pops out grabs ya and drags ya back in. Scary thought.

If that was indeed a squid ?

Mon, 2013-11-04 07:30

That the killer whales were feeding on as seems likely @ 4 metres hood length one wonders what the overall length would have been - I also wonder what the hell hit the submersible to cause it to spin and kink the fibre optices at 700 metres ............hmmmm we know so so little about our oceans !

also when that big white was attacking the boat it was a bit of a worry

those squid are well

Mon, 2013-11-04 08:40

those squid are well documented-when we were longlining another boat found one dead in the Rotto trench and brought it in, was in the West Australian, from memory 10 meters overall.

I didnt see it personally unfortunately, but WANewspapers should still have it on file, would have been about 1999
