2 stroke oil

Gday,
Ive got a mate coming around tommorrow to check out my out board for me tommorow so I can finally get my boat in the water. The outboard is an old 115 Merc (blue stripe). Ive just gone to mix up some fuel but only have normal 2 stroke oil (shell)
Is it alright to use this oil or is it essential to use proper outboard oil?
Whats the difference between the two?
Cheers

Marine two stoke engnines are water cooled and run cooler than air cooled engined. The oil is formulated to account for this. There are other diferences as well.
