150k budget car and boat, suggestions?
Submitted by troy fuller on Tue, 2014-05-06 17:13
When I finally do come back to perth (awhile yet) I'm looking at spending 150k on a boat and 4x4
I would want a boat that's on a trailer, 7m or bigger with probably a single engine as don't want 600$ fuel bill when going out for a fish
and a 4x4 that would be able to tow it and still be able to head on the beach for camping and so on
so my question is, how would you spend 150k on a setup?
also what setup do you have ATM?
Cheers, Troy

+1 for the petrol Discovery.
Not the prettiest beast, and a bit old now days. But it's a worthwhile consideration for a two vehicle.

I have a 235 Boston Whaler
I have a 235 Boston Whaler and landrover discovery 3......one out of two ain't bad....haha.
Landy not as bad as people think but a compromise so the missis has a 7 seat soccer mums car that still tows 3.5 t.
My choice with no missis compromise.......100 series turbo would be towing my Whaler. 200 series better but rather spend it on a better boat than a better car.
For that money, go fiberglass dude! Love the whaler!
Boston Whaler 235 Conquest......getting the flogging it was built for.

don't instantly think twin
don't instantly think twin donks use twice the fuel of a single.
Recently come back from Exmouth, I've got a 26ft fury with twin 140's and the other boat had a single 225 Suzuki on a 21ft glass boat.
I would have been less than 20% worse on fuel. But 25% more in power.
Remember a single donk will work harder. And for bigger boats, twins give you a hell of a lot more stability when travelling.
I will never go back to a single.

Car - Landcruiser, jeep or
Car - Landcruiser, jeep or dual cab with 3.5ton towing cap. around $50,000.
Then I'd look for a good cond. second hand fibreglass hull/trailer for around $70,000 (motor not important but considered in cost), sell/trade in the motor on it and wack a new Yammy or Suzuki 4 stroke on it with the remaining $30,000 and do any other upgrades required (electronics etc). End up with a quite economical and reliable rig for offshore work.

unlike some of the others
unlike some of the others i'd get a gxl 70 series ~100k then find something you like on the market for your change. You will spend more time in your dual cab/wagon than your boat (unfortunately) so spend there

70/80 split
70 grand new car ie ranger, jeep then 80 on boat 21ft with 200 4st on back in fibreglass you wil have a choice ,haines sig, haines hunter and cruisecraft are in that price range.one thing is to do your research as the combo will have to be just what you want or the missus will have your nuts if you buy something that your not happy with.

Why not buy a second hand
Why not buy a second hand diesel V8 powered Land Cruiser Sahara with 100,000k's on the ticker for 70k? Way better tow car than some of the others that have been suggested and it's plush inside.

If you want to save a few bucks...
I know where a 100 series GLX turbo diesel (1HD-FTE engine- The Best motor Ever) Landcruiser is and will be forsale at a reasonable price. PM me if interested I can hook you up
Also know of a boat that may be right size and price one of the members on here is thinking about parting with.
Whatever you do DONT get a Jeep...

$150K you'll be styling....
I'm VERY impressed with my 200 series 4.5L twin T/D it's a seriously good tow vehicle, school and holiday bus! I'm towing a 6.5m fibreglass cat with twin 90HP Suzuki 4-strokes which weighs in at 3T for the whole rig.

petrol or diesel
petrol or diesel Brucesta?
Have you fitted a Scangauge-makes it easier to see what its actually using.
http://scangauge.com.au/scangauge2/
Mine uses about 18-24L/100 towing 3.5T plus 7 people-I put the whole combination over the weighbridge packed but minus the people and got a touch under 6.6 tonnes GCM before going to Coral Bay
The 18 was with a light sthly tailwind and 24 into a strong one coming back

Just came back from Exmouth,
Just came back from Exmouth, first long trip with the new VX 200 series diesel.
24-25 ltr per 100km on average, however got a strong southerly head wind on the return trip from Canarvan to Geraldton, fuel consumption was 31ltr per 100km but still doing 100km per hour. Basically wouldn't go past 4th gear due to the wind and often dropped back to 3rd.
Was towing my Fury 26ft at 3.5t
Still much better than my previous jeep

Really ? I towed my Trophy
Really ?
I towed my Trophy 800kms the other day and overall had a average of 14.5l/100. She was loaded to the brim with roofrack full aswell.Still not as heavy as your Fury but i wouldnt have thought your jeep would be over 25l/100
Ive found the economy towing my boat with my Jeep is heaps better than the 200 series!

Are you towing in S4 mate?
Are you towing in S4 mate? Never tow in D (Toyota state this in owners manual aswell). I just got back from kalbarri towing 3.5T and averaged 22/100k mostly sitting on 95kmh. I have a scangauge which allows you to monitor your Auto-Trans fluid temp (TFT). This is the only way to really know if the torque converter is locked. It will never lock in 6th while towing and I found it would slip in and out in S5. When it unlocks your TFT and your fuel consumption almost instantly start shooting up. In S4 your rpm is slightly higher but TFT is constantly locked and fuel consumption much better and most importantly TFT isn't through the roof. For $180 scangauge is worth every penny IMO and your Trans mission will definately love you for it!

To get the upgraded shift
To get the upgraded shift pattern in the 200 to activate you need to put it in S (from D) then twice up to 6 within a couple of seconds.
Both my 200 and 100TD tow much better and more economical at least one down from top gear, the 200 as Stevo said goes best in 4th anything under 100.
The 200 will not lock up the TC lower than 4th gear.

+1 for the 200 series and
+1 for the 200 series and Sailfish setup. Plenty of second hand cruisers getting around with less than 60k on the clock and you wont get a better boat for the price..... but if fibreglass is the only option maybe look at a Noosacat....

Although the
Although the landrovers(disco, rangey) are rated to tow ridonkulous amounts their wheel base is too short and it tends to cause holes in your seats from your coit clenching. They also struggle big time with the weight. I towed a big shark cat with my '91 rangey a few times and it was terrifying. Can't comment on what the new ones are like.
Import a coupla effies or simlar from the states, flog one to recoup your costs then just spend 80k on a boat and come out miles ahead. Ultimate tow vehicle sorted and adequate 4by as long as you don't want to do rock climbs or quicksand.

shouldn't really discount a vehicle type for towing by testing grandads car.....tow with a new RR and see if it is terrifying.

You're not going to have too
You're not going to have too much left for a 7m boat out of 150k if you buy a new rangie. Hence my reference to the classic series.

yeah lol...very fair comment, infact you might have to double that 150 to get something new in the RR. haha
my point though '91 rangie = $1500ish (terrifying to tow with and prob terrifying to drive at all!)...sure there is a compromise in there somewhere.
I should have said "newer RR or disco etc"
landcruisers seem to be the best tow vehicles out there if you have unlimited funds but I just don't think they are the best "value for money" when buying a tow vehicle.

My disco 3 tows my 235 Boston
My disco 3 tows my 235 Boston whaler, 480 l of fuel and 100 l water plus gear easily, tow weight of boat and trailer empty is about 3t, fully loaded would test the 3.5 t limit......I must admit I was amazed as I did not have high hopes. The D3/D4 landrovers are not comparable to the older models. Air suspension eliminates any sag as it adjusts suspension jight with load, sit perfectly level and tows pretty well.

As a mechanic I wouldn't
As a mechanic I wouldn't touch a Landrover and found out the hard way when I bought my wife a Jeep. Nissan or Toyota is the only way to go in Australia. Solid axle up front is a must on any 4WD. My opinion on the car would be a 100s Cruiser a 70s Cruiser or a 4800 GQ Patrol. The Patrol sucks the juice but has heaps of power for towing witch is important for heading north especially around North Hampton.
On the boat I would be looking out for a second hand Stagg.
I actually fish.

I've got a 4.8 patrol and it
I've got a 4.8 patrol and it was using 30L / 100km towing a 2 tonne boat up to Geraldton. Also since I put 33 inch tyres on the auto gear box keeps kicking down into 3rd on even the slightest incline. It's not a very good choice for a tow vehicle in my opinion.
It is fun to drive though.

As per stevo above you need
As per stevo above you need to have a look at the transmission on your car and consider the gear ratios and what they are meant for. Most 4 speed autos (or any auto) are set up with the 4th gear (or top gear) as an overdrive. Basically when towing don't use it, select 3rd gear (or next one down) this will mean less strain in on the trans and you will have better response, you will also run lower trans temps and have better trans oil pressure/flow, you will also use the same or even less fuel (using it more efficiently).
Warning do not use cruise control towing - you risk kicking down gears too hard and blowing out trans seals.
(even in my 4 spd commy I drive around town when not towing in 3rd use less petrol, better response/acceleration and better for the car overall, I only kick it into 4th when 90-100km/hr or above on flat roads)

May not be the tow vehicle
May not be the tow vehicle itself that makes it "terrifying" (assuming your referring to the trailer swaying side to side as being towed)
The trailer set up, drawbar length and weight distribution over the axels (amount of weight forward or rearward of axel/s) has more of a bearing on how the set up pulls/sways behind the car.

I totally agree with that
It is all how the trailer is set up . My trailer used to sway side to side then when I put new springs in it I noticed the old springs were not parallel with the trailer one side was 30 mm further back from the tow ball than the other and it always made the ass of my car sag when I hooked up the trailer so when I put the new axles in I moved them forward another 5o mm and now trailer tows perfect

You can had my sons Bomb
Diavo Ceilo, possible pull 250Kg's is she gets speed up. Cost of Car $500. That leaves you with $149500. 159 for the boat, 500bucks woth of roses for the Mrs to keep her very very happy. Migh have to try and fit a 351 Donk in the ceilo ( I have been told by a shonky bloke at the pub its is doable, but would just strecth the side painels at the front out a bit. Should then be able to tow maybe 3.5T in a drag in Kwinana.
I think this would be the perfect soloution for you - dont you think????????
