100hp yamaha 4 stroke 2002. Leg wanted

 Hi all

Heading back from rotto and we started hearing a dreadful ginding noise from my gearbox.

Got home drained the oil.... We'll... Sludge... it's black it smells and there's a lot of metal shavings in there.

Im thinking it's better to buy a new one than a recon?

Dose anyone know where to buy a new leg from And how much is it going to hurt me?

or is it worth getting a recon ?

you can get a relative price

you can get a relative price by jumping on Boats.net and pricing up the parts (gears bearings seals shims) as against the complete lower unit.

New one would be better just from the warranty side but nothing wrong with a competent outboard bloke doing it.

For a price here for complete try any Yamaha outboard dealer but Im guessing about $2500-$3K

 Thanks rob

My first thought was to get a recon but after talking to a mechanic mate of mine ,his view was if you recon some of the parts to get it going maybe sooner or later the other "older" parts that we're not replaced would fail and you would end up paying as much as a new one???

Am I thinking too far ahead ?

Any recommendations of a mechanic south of the river?

na sorry mate i dont live in perth but someone else probably can recommend.

Really all your likely to be keeping is the casing, shafts (probably), carrier and shims but they are pretty costly by themselves but best bet is talk to a workshop (skip the sales people) as it may only cost you $50 to strip and quote.

Very roughly looks like about $1000 parts as opposed to $1800 for a new one. Different prices here in Aus of course but probably relative.

have you dropped the gearbox

Wed, 2014-02-12 23:02

have you dropped the gearbox off the outboard yet?

Its very easy to do, takes about 20 minutes and should only need a 14mm ring spanner, 14mm and 12mm sockets.

Then you can take it in with you?

If you havent done it before let me know and I'll run you thru it.
